Local politicians have called for clarity to be given to Hawick Common Riding as coronavirus restrictions are tightened across Scotland.
Although still several months away, planning begins for the annual events far in advance.
Last year’s events included a virtual concert to allow some of the traditions to go ahead in the face of restrictions on social distancing and large events.
Not only is the Common Riding a source of pride for Teries, but there is also a significant economic benefit to local businesses in Hawick and the surrounding areas.
John Lamont MP said:
“The Common Riding is the most important event of the year for many people in Hawick.
“Last year’s concert was fantastic, and I was glad to be able to take part from my home in Coldstream.
“This far in advance it is impossible to know what the restrictions on our lives will be in May and June. We have seen how quickly the virus has taken hold in Hawick in recent weeks.
“However, it is important that the committee get clarity from the authorities, particularly on funding.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“I love taking part in Hawick Common Riding. It is always an amazing display of civic pride.
“The events of the last year are unprecedented, even in the long history of the ridings.
“We are living under constant uncertainty and changing rules and regulations.
“It is therefore essential that as much information about holding events and what funding is available for them is shared by the council and government.”
