Almost half a million premises, including tens of thousands across Scotland, now have access to gigabit connectivity thanks to UK Government investment.
This is part of a £1 billion government funding commitment until the end of 2021, with a further £5 billion for the hardest-to-reach areas to be earmarked soon.
Gigabit capable broadband can provide speeds of over 1000mb/s. It can be installed using the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme; a UK-wide, supplier-led scheme offering vouchers to offset the cost of installing gigabit-capable broadband to premises.
Nearly 45,000 vouchers, worth more than £90 million, have been issued to subsidise the cost of building faster, gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure to homes and businesses.
Rural communities in the Borders are eligible for the scheme and are being urged to sign up. People can check their eligibility here: https://gigabitvoucher.culture.gov.uk/
John Lamont MP said: “Gigabit broadband can be transformational for rural communities like those in the Scottish Borders. Especially with 1 in 10 premises in our area still not receiving decent speeds.
“The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme has already connected up thousands of homes and can be worth up to £1500 per property, or £3500 for a business.
“It’s becoming ever more important to have a quality broadband connection. We have all relied on it more recently to work, shop and for entertainment purposes.
“The scheme could really help local communities to thrive and I would be happy to assist any constituents with their applications.”
Iain Stewart MP, Scotland Office minister, added: “It is pleasing to see almost half a million premises across the UK, including tens of thousands in Scotland, have been connected to gigabit-capable broadband as part of our £1 billion funding commitment, which is soon to rise to £6 billion.
“Digital connectivity is essential for everyday life and the UK Government wants to make sure that no-one is left behind. I urge businesses and homes particularly in rural areas, to take advantage of the voucher scheme for fast, reliable broadband.”
