The Prime Minister has promised a ‘New Deal’ which will deliver new infrastructure across the UK, bringing a boost to the economy and improving skills.
Boris Johnson said that there will be a review to look at how best to improve transport links between the four nations of the UK, as well as bringing forward funding to accelerate infrastructure projects in Scotland.
Borders MP, John Lamont, has welcomed the announcement and is pressing for more investment in the A1 and the extension of the Borders Railway as a result.
John Lamont MP said: “Cross border infrastructure is key for ensuring trade, education, and work opportunities, especially in border communities like ours.
“I warmly welcome that the UK Government is investing in infrastructure to help deal with the economic fallout of coronavirus. This will help boost jobs and skills and make long lasting change to communities.
“The review of transport links between the four nations of the UK is also very welcome. The extension of the Borders Railway and upgrading the A1 must be at the heart of this.
“This ambitious package of support from the UK Government highlights the need to invest in every part of Britain. The coronavirus has had a significant impact on our economy. We must now build back better, faster and greener than ever before.”
