TSB have announced that they will be closing their branches in Hawick, Kelso and Peebles in the Scottish Borders. This will leave Galashiels as the sole remaining branch.
The Berwick-Upon-Tweed branch is also due to close which served customers in Berwickshire which was closer for some.
Kelso and Peebles branches have not yet reopened since closing for coronavirus. TSB say they will now not reopen at all.
The Berwick branch will close on the 3rd March 2021, whilst Hawick will not close until 2nd June 2021.
John Lamont MP said: “This is another bitter blow to banking customers in the Borders.
“I know that many now feel they can do their banking online, but vulnerable customers rely on having access to cash and having someone to discuss any issues they are having.
“This is not to mention the business owners in Kelso and Hawick who may now struggle to deposit cash and pick up floats.
“However, I feel most sorry for the TSB employees who have been left in the lurch. Whenever people come to me for help about banking issues they are always very complimentary of the staff, and the great service they provide for their local communities.
“I have already been in touch with management at TSB to discuss how this will affect their employees and communities who rely on their local branch.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP added: “The news about bank closures is concerning for the Borders.
“Decisions to close banks affect local communities badly and I am disappointed at this decision, given the impact on elderly and vulnerable people.
“When a bank leaves a town or village centre, it does take a lifeline away for many people, and has an impact on surrounding businesses too.
“I have had reassurances from TSB that everything is being done to ensure that all existing customers are supported through this time.
“There will be one-on-one meetings with those who use the bank regularly to help them make alternative arrangements.
“The Hawick branch will close next June and the Kelso one, which hasn’t reopened since the Covid pandemic, will remain closed.
