Local parliamentarians have commented on reports that the UK Government is set to announce a £23m financial compensation package for the fishing industry.
Mr Lamont supported calls for compensation last week in the House of Commons whilst questioning the Environment Secretary.
John Lamont MP said:
“This situation has been devastating for the fishing industry including right here in the Borders. I completely understand the frustration of companies unable to export.
“I’ve called for compensation to be given to those affected so this is welcome news. However, I await the details of the scheme to see when and who will be recompensed.
“It is vital that the UK Government continue to work at pace to iron out the problems we have seen recently.
“Similarly, the Scottish Government must now step up to the mark and ensure export certificates are processed quicker than they have been.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“Seafood exporters are crucial to the Borders and to the Scottish economy.
“I welcome financial support from the UK Government as it will go a long way to help processing businesses who have experienced issues getting product to market, especially live shellfish
“The Prime Minister has confirmed that any business experiencing issues exporting to the EU, through no fault of their own, will be compensated.
“We need to see greater detail on the funding, and I urge both the UK and Scottish Government to work constructively together to resolve paperwork and other issues that might affect future transportation of seafood.”
