The UK Government has announced £227m funding from the Spending Review to support the Post Office network.
£50m will be earmarked to subsidise the network in commercially challenging locations, with £177m being invested in the future of Post Office branches.
This will help ensure Post Office branches in rural areas can keep providing essential services for the people that rely on them.
John Lamont MP said:
“Post Offices are vitally important for our local communities. They provide such a wide range of services from renewing your passport to returning online purchases.
“As bank branches disappear, they are becoming an ever more important part of our cash infrastructure too. Most banks allow you to deposit or withdraw cash from your local Post Office.
“This funding will help protect the network of branches across the Borders. Rural areas like ours depend on having essential services provided locally.
UK Postal Affairs Minister, Paul Scully MP added:
“From the Highlands and Islands to the Borders, the Post Office provides a lifeline to communities across Scotland - supporting local people, businesses and economies.
“Covid-19 has highlighted the important role postmasters play and this £227m funding from the UK Government will ensure post offices in Scotland’s most remote areas can continue to provide these essential services.”
