A group of mums have managed to reopen a Duns nursery that was expected to close.
The new Duns Community Nursery opened on 3 April after parents set up a not-for-profit company to take over the building lease and retain the original staff.
The group decided to act after hearing that the only private childcare facility in Duns, the Links nursery, was to close.
I am very pleased to see Duns Community Nursery up and running, only a few months after the families involved contacted me with fears that there would be a significant reduction in childcare in the town. It is a great achievement for everyone involved.
The closure would have resulted in job losses and negatively impacted many people’s careers who would have been left without childcare provision for their children.
Nursery closures can be very difficult for parents and their children, especially in rural areas where there may not be many other options available.
This group of mums have worked tirelessly to help families in and around Duns. I hope other people will take inspiration from the community model they have established and try to replicate it elsewhere.
