On Friday night, I attended a public meeting with 60 members of the Westruther community.
Westruther residents are concerned about plans by Berwickshire Housing Association (BHA) to evict residents from their homes on Edgar Road in the village.
BHA claim that the houses are no longer safe. They have started legal action to evict local residents, including an elderly couple who have lived in the community for most of their lives.
The Edgar Road tenants do not want to be forced out of the village they love and want to stay in.
Understandably, this is causing a significant degree of distress to the Westruther community.
The village is united behind Edgar Road residents and so am I. We will not allow this to go unchallenged.
BHA have failed to understand the wider impact that these evictions will have on the village.
BHA’s management must pause the evictions. They must find another solution that respects local wishes. They should not drag elderly people through a heavy-handed legal process.
I regularly meet with BHA’s management but in light of the outpouring of support from the community on Friday, I have asked for an urgent meeting with them on Monday morning.
BHA must think again.
