The number of free-to-use ATMs in the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk constituency fell by 10 from July 2018 to July 2023.
The figures, provided by LINK, which runs the UK’s cash machine network, show the number of free ATMs fell by 14 per cent across that period.
These figures are disappointing but not surprising as big banks have gradually reduced services in the Borders and other rural areas across Scotland and the UK.
It’s a frustrating trend that I consistently raise with the banks and argue that they need to treat Borders residents better.
Earlier this year, the Lloyds Banking Group, who operate the Bank of Scotland, decided to close branches in Duns, Eyemouth, Jedburgh and Newcastleton.
But local people, especially the elderly and vulnerable, need access to cash services.
I will continue to campaign to maintain and ideally increase the availability of free ATMs and bank branches across the Borders.
