The UK Government has opened a new walk through testing centre in Galashiels. The centre opened on Saturday 9th January at Langlee Community Centre.
The centre will operate seven days a week, with appointments available from 8am to 8pm.
In Scotland, the UK Government is providing all COVID testing and test processing outside of the NHS. Around two thirds of all daily tests are provided by the UK Government, in support of Scotland’s health services.
The test centre is part of the largest network of diagnostic testing facilities created in British history. In Scotland, this comprises 6 drive through sites, 24 walk-through sites, 21 mobile units, plus the Glasgow Lighthouse Lab which is working round the clock to process samples.
Statistics show the UK is carrying out some of the highest numbers of Covid-19 tests per head of population. The UK currently ranks 6th in the world.
Tests must be booked in advance at: www.nhsinform.scot/test-and-protect or by calling 0800 028 2816. People should only book a test if they have coronavirus symptoms (a high temperature, a new and continuous cough, or a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste).
The new testing centre has been welcomed by local MP, John Lamont.
John Lamont MP said:
“It is great news that the UK Government has opened a new walk-through testing centre at Langlee Community Centre in Galashiels.
“Testing is a really important part of managing the virus as it helps to identify those who are positive and stop further spread. Therefore, I urge all Borderers to get a test if they are displaying any symptoms of coronavirus.
“The quicker we get on top of the virus, including the more transmissible variant, the quicker we can get back to normal.
“With vaccine roll out starting to pick up pace across the UK there is hope on the horizon. However, we must all continue to stick to the rules to stop the spread here in the Borders.”
