John Lamont MP and Rachael Hamilton MSP have offered their support to those who have been affected by Storm Arwen over the weekend.
In the aftermath of the snowstorm and high winds that left thousands of homes without power, Mr Lamont and Ms Hamilton are keen to ensure that the Borders recovers swiftly from the damage caused by Arwen.
The clean-up operation has now begun with power having been returned to many homes and roads mostly cleared of debris from fallen trees.
The politicians have said that they are keen to work with local authorities in helping the worst affected communities access the help they need. They also stress that anyone affected by the storm who still requires help can contact them for assistance. Insurance companies must also ensure that they pay out on claims as quickly as possible.
John Lamont MP said:
“The damage caused by Storm Arwen has hit many communities across Borders hard. From seeing the power go out at my parents’ house in Duns, to the trees strewn across the road on my way home to Coldstream, it was clear to me just how serious this storm was.
“I was incredibly saddened to hear that a number of people across the country lost their lives during the storm.
“I am thankful to the emergency services and workers from Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Power Energy Network for their hard work over the weekend for swiftly restoring power and ensuring our communities were kept safe during the storm.
“If there are any ongoing issues relating to the storm, please do not hesitate to contact the dedicated helpline set up by the council. Likewise, if you wish to contact me about anything relating to the storm including problems relating to insurance claims, my team and I will be happy to assist you in whatever way we can.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“The force of nature never fails to surprise me, and the damage reaped from Storm Arwen has been very worrying.
“I am sure I speak for us all when I say we are very grateful to our emergency services, farmers, Scottish Borders Council and the many other organisations involved in keeping us safe during the storm, and helping us return to normality in the aftermath.
“I am working hard to establish what can be done to restore power to rural areas. Today I was in the Kale Valley, speaking to residents and communicating with SP Energy Networks about the ongoing power outages.
